How To Read A Spiritual Book

Most, so-called Truth students, have shelves (or piles) of Truth books, and they’ve read all of them once or twice. Usually, a few favorites are kept on the nightstand for quick access when inspiration or comfort is needed.

There comes a time when every sincere “student of Truth” thinks, “I’m tired of merely reading these books. I want to be the books. I want my life to be a living testimony of these statements I’m reading.” Reader, what about you? If you had the choice of reading a hundred Truth books or having your life be a living testimony of just one of them, which would you choose?

Books are wonderful. And Truth books, when well read, are awesome. No writer of a Truth book intends for you to be shackled to their work for a lifetime. The book is intended to be a springboard to higher realization and grander living. A Truth book, well read, should leave the reader happier, healthier, more successful and prosperous. If, after reading a book from cover to cover, your life is the same, that book was not well read.

In this post, I’m offering two methods of book reading that I promise will deliver more of what you were hoping from your reading. At first glance, both methods seem slow – slothfully slow. Yet, both will fulfill the mission of your living the book, and not merely reading the book. Let’s get to the methods.

METHOD #1 – SNAIL’S PACE  METHOD

  1. Select one of your favorite books.
  2. Start reading from the very beginning (the introduction if it has one).
  3. Read until a word, line, or paragraph grabs your attention and STOP!
  4. Write the word or line, and the page number.
  5. Shelve the book until later.
  6. For 7 days, contemplate your selected word or passage.
  7. Take it into your daily silent listening, asking your Consciousness for greater understanding of it.
  8. Once the 7 days are up, grab the book and continue until another word or passage grabs your attention.
  9. Repeat steps 4 through 7.
  10. Continue until the entire book is read.

METHOD #2 – QUICK-READ METHOD

Because you do read an entire book, this method seems faster.

  1. Select one of your favorite books.
  2. Read the entire book within a week, if possible.
  3. Highlight only words or passages that grab your attention.
  4. Once you’ve finished, reread only the highlighted sections.
  5. Choose one of those highlighted sections. [Choose wisely because you will be working with this section for an entire year.]
  6. Contemplate that section every day, followed by a brief period of silent “listening.”
  7. Throughout the day, remind yourself of the Truth in that highlighted section.
  8. In prayer, ask your Consciousness for greater clarity and understanding of that passage.
  9. At some point, the contemplation of that section will reveal more Truth.
  10. Take the newly revealed idea and follow steps 6 through 8.
  11. Repeat with each new Revelation.

The brilliance of this reading approach is the opportunity to witness for yourself that a single statement of Truth contains all Truth.

Whichever method you choose, you will never be the same. I trust you will try these suggestions. Please let me know how it goes for you.
