The Secret

This excerpt was sent to me by one of our readers. The author is Christian Science Practitioner and Lecturer, Irving Tomlinson. It’s message is simple and practical. As one of my colleagues once said, “We don’t talk enough about Perfection.” This excerpt does.

I have learned how to make Science a thing of life, not words, and I am going to tell you what the wonderful secret is, for it is wonderful. Now it is this: not to see or hear or repeat any kind of imperfection. It is seeing, hearing, and repeating only good at all times, under all circumstances, in spite of everything that appears to the contrary.

I make this resolution every morning when I wake up, when first I open my eyes, and I review it every hour of the day. I see perfection, a perfect cause and effect, perfect God and perfect man. And I refuse to admit the slightest imperfection in myself of my friends, and in my so-called enemies, in my affairs or in the affairs of the world. I take my radical stand every day for the perfection of God in everything and everybody He has made.

I look upon the world with God’s eyes and see it as He sees it. I refuse to see it any other way. I stop a dozen times a day to review this resolution and to make sure that I am not giving way to fear or criticism. I watch my thoughts about people – the lame, the old, the unlovely (to sense) that I meet – and stray animals. I have taken a radical stand for the perfection of all things, and I will not, absolutely will not, release the perfect standard.

The results have been marvelous. Try it, and you will forget to wear your glasses, as they will not be necessary. You will be seeing with God’s eyes.

Does Evil Exist?

“All of the metaphysical literature I read states there is no evil. But, Allen, all I see around me is evil. Please help me understand how there is no evil.”

The Simple Answer

I think I wrote on this subject before, yet there is always more to say. So, let’s jump right in. The easy answer is: Because God is Love and God is All, there’s no place for evil to exist. However, that’s too easy. Let’s dig deeper into God’s Allness for a better answer.

A List Of Evils With One Common Denominator

Take a look at this list of evil appearances:

  • war
  • disease
  • abuse
  • crime
  • accidents
  • discrimination
  • bullying
  • enslavement

By no means is this an exhaustive list, but it’s enough to get the ball rolling. Read the list again. What do the listed items have in common? There is a common denominator here. Do you see it? The answer is duality. For any of these appearances to exist, there must be more than one present. In each case, something is done to something or someone else. In each case, there’s more than one.

Love Is The Only Power

From Jeremiah 23:24 we read, “Do not I fill heaven and earth says the Lord?” Then turning to Isaiah 45:5 we see, “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me….”

Despite all appearances, there is only one Infinite, Eternal, Indivisible Presence present. Because it denotes one unified whole, Indivisible is the key-word here. This One, as all Action, is called (in human terms) LOVE. That’s why you often read, “Love is the only Power.”

The Antidote To Evil’s Appearances

Since there is only One, do you see the impossibility of actual evil? Whenever there appears to be the threat of evil in your life, remind yourself that Infinite, Indivisible Perfect Presence – God – is all that is Present.

I know firsthand that sometimes the threat of evil will make the heart race and the mind conjure up pictures of doom and disaster. The antidote is the crystal clear realization of Indivisible Oneness. Have you ever prayed for a realization of Oneness? Try it.

Ask This One Question

The questioner states, “all I see around me is evil.” Yes, that may be true. And it’s equally true that all a Midwestern farmer will see when he looks at his land is a flat earth. Without an aerial view, he wouldn’t know better.

Christ Jesus and his followers looked at the same land. They saw a troubled earthly environment while he saw the Kingdom of Heaven. What’s going on here? Christ had an aerial (transcendent) view, and we can enjoy that same view of our environment.

If what you are seeing troubles your soul, know that you are not seeing what IS. It’s an alert to reassess what you are seeing. This is, as you’ve guessed, an “inner” approach. In silent prayer ask of “your” God Consciousness: Is this God appearing? Now, wait for the answer. You may have to rinse and repeat, but it’s worth it.
