The Secret

This excerpt was sent to me by one of our readers. The author is Christian Science Practitioner and Lecturer, Irving Tomlinson. It’s message is simple and practical. As one of my colleagues once said, “We don’t talk enough about Perfection.” This excerpt does.

I have learned how to make Science a thing of life, not words, and I am going to tell you what the wonderful secret is, for it is wonderful. Now it is this: not to see or hear or repeat any kind of imperfection. It is seeing, hearing, and repeating only good at all times, under all circumstances, in spite of everything that appears to the contrary.

I make this resolution every morning when I wake up, when first I open my eyes, and I review it every hour of the day. I see perfection, a perfect cause and effect, perfect God and perfect man. And I refuse to admit the slightest imperfection in myself of my friends, and in my so-called enemies, in my affairs or in the affairs of the world. I take my radical stand every day for the perfection of God in everything and everybody He has made.

I look upon the world with God’s eyes and see it as He sees it. I refuse to see it any other way. I stop a dozen times a day to review this resolution and to make sure that I am not giving way to fear or criticism. I watch my thoughts about people – the lame, the old, the unlovely (to sense) that I meet – and stray animals. I have taken a radical stand for the perfection of all things, and I will not, absolutely will not, release the perfect standard.

The results have been marvelous. Try it, and you will forget to wear your glasses, as they will not be necessary. You will be seeing with God’s eyes.

The Solution For Stubborn Problems

there-is-always-hope-dont-give-up

What You Can Do About A Stubborn Case Is This

It’s time I wrote about those stubborn cases – those problems that seem to cling like barnacles to a whale’s belly. This could be a chronic disease such as asthma, diabetes, arthritis, etc. Or it could look like a chronic case of “I never have enough money.” Then again, it could appear as chronic dysfunctional relationships. Whatever the case may seem to be, the problem looks like it’s been hanging around for years, and you just can’t beat it. Reader, you can’t beat it, but you can know the nothingness of it.

Starting from our basic premise that God is the only Presence, and this Presence is changeless Perfection, you can rest assured that Perfection IS the only Presence and the only Evidence. This, and not the barnacles, is your starting point.

Do you have a long-standing problem that seems real? Have you been trying to heal yourself, or get rid of it? Go back to the starting point and stay there. This has to trigger the realization that since Perfection (God) is All, this thing cannot be, and it is not present. No matter how long-standing the problem has been, a clear realization such as this is like sunlight flooding a room that’s sat in darkness for years. The darkness (trouble) is now nowhere to be found.

Regardless of how stubborn and resistant a problem seems to be, no appearance of imperfection should be tolerated. Stiff and aching joints, frequent migraines, tumors and tubercles, turbulent relationships, paycheck-to-paycheck living – none of these should be tolerated.

Getting Cozy With A Problem Is Not Getting Rid Of It

When a problem seems difficult to “heal,” some resort to snuggling up and getting as comfortable as possible with it. At night, those who seem to suffer from arthritis reach to the nightstand for some pain-relieving ointment. They slather it all over their aching joints and hope for a good night’s sleep. All the while, they have resigned themselves to a lifetime of joint rubbing.

There are some who can’t seem to shake the “I can’t make ends meet” dis-ease, and they enslave themselves to the latest magic-working budget plan. Or, as a woman once told me who could not shake a seemingly dysfunctional relationship syndrome, “I’ll just stick with my same jacked-up friends.”

These are examples of snuggling up to a problem rather than perceiving the nothingness of it. Stop! The realization that God is All must goad you to rise up and say to these hallucinations, “This far and no further.” If you seem to be experiencing a stubborn case of “whatever,” imagine there’s a large black billboard in front of you, and in big bold red letters are these two words: Don’t Resign!

Instead Of The Stubborn Situation, There Is The Perfection Of God

You’ve heard it said that behind every problem is the Perfection of God. For the sake of this article, behind every stubborn case is the Perfection of God. However, this is very dualistic language, so let’s correct it now. Let’s take the next step and know that INSTEAD OF THE STUBBORN CASE, GOD’S PERFECTION IS. Doesn’t this stay true to our starting point? Staying and not straying is the key to resolving seemingly stubborn situations.

The Takeaway

Don’t give in and don’t give up is the take-away from today’s part one of a two-part series. Maybe it’s been months, perhaps years, that you’ve endured your seeming problem, but all the while it was a lie about the Omnipresent Perfection.

Right Prayer Is Awesome

the-power-of-prayer

Are Your Prayers Self-Defeating?

In the last post, I ended with a promise to explain the insanity of trying to use Truth to improve your life. The fictitious runner’s story below is used to make a point.

For sixteen months, Imogene Franklin pushed her body through a tortuous training program. In the upcoming race, she wanted to beat the world record for the fifty-yard dash. On the day of the race, Imogene does something strange. At the starting block, she pulls a rope from her waistband and ties it around her ankles. The gun fires. The racers are off. Imogene, ankles tied together, falls flat on her stomach, scraping the side of her face. Why, after all those months of training, would she tie her ankles together? It was a self-defeating act. Wouldn’t you agree?

Did you make the connection between Imogene and people who are trying to use Truth to fix their lives? There is a connection.

Most likely, you are like many of our other readers. You agree that God is the only Presence. You believe that God is All. You, I’m sure believe – even know – that God is Perfection. Not merely perfect, but Perfection Itself. As God is omnipresent Perfection, there is no spot where Perfection is not. According to what you say you believe, this Perfection has to include every aspect of your life – the whole shebang!

Denying God’s Omnipresence But Still Wanting It

“Praying” with the intention to improve any aspect of your life is denying God’s Perfection being that aspect. Praying to improve any aspect of your life is affirming the absence of Perfection in and as that particular aspect. It’s like tying your ankles before the gun goes off. It’s self-defeating.

It does you no good to start your praying with the absence of God. Denying God’s ever present Perfection while hoping for it is being double minded. Nothing good can come from it. Reader, inherently you know that God is changeless. “I am the Lord thy God and I change not.” If God’s Perfection is not already present in, through and as the entirety of your life, it will never be present.

The thing to do is to realize that the allness of Perfection is all that there is as your life, mind, being and body. The thing to do is to realize that this Perfection is the only experience.

Betty, Joel Goldsmith, and Practical Prayer

Is it practical to not pray about your problems? Is it practical (as suggested in the previous post) to take your prayerful attention completely off of your seeming problems? It’s the most practical thing you can do. The following is a true story.

During one of my seminars in Arizona, I met a woman named Betty (name changed). Betty was a friend and student of Joel Goldsmith, founder of The Infinite Way. At the time of this story, Betty was a middle-aged woman seeking direction and purpose in her life. She was too vibrant to rock her life away watching games shows on television. Betty craved a purposeful and successful life. However, Betty knew that praying for purpose, success and money were spiritual no-nos. Remember, she was a close friend of Goldsmith’s. The core principle of Infinite Way is praying only for a realization of God. As impractical as this seemed, God-realization was her only focus.

On a trip to Washington, DC, Betty and a friend dined at one of those hifalutin restaurants in northwest DC. Her dinner companion excused himself to go to the restroom. While waiting for him to return, Betty fiddled with her linen napkin. She twisted and looped it into a unique shape. As soon as she was done with napkin-twisting, a beautiful and richly dressed woman came over to her table. Pointing to the napkin, she said to Betty, “Where did you get that?” Betty answered, “I just did this while waiting for my dinner companion.” The woman told Betty that she was the queen of some small country and was here visiting the embassy. “I am having a dinner hosted by the state department and would like to have 1000 of those for the guests. Can you have them for me in three days?”

Betty, a former restaurant owner, said “Yes.” Quickly she assembled a team of people to make the intricately twisted napkins for this royal occasion. This was the start of a high-end tableware company that became a multi-million dollar business.

Did she pray about her problem? No. Was her God-focused prayer practical? You decide. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God … and all things shall be added unto you.”

What Are These Evil Appearances?

itsallgood

Appearances Of Evil Alert You To The Reality Of Perfection

Let’s now perceive how it is, and why it is, that any appearance of evil is not evil – that it really serves a good purpose. If the fulfillment of any purpose is good, the impulsion behind this purpose has to be good, and not evil. The mistake lies in our misconception of the meaning of that which we have called evil.

Just as a mistake in mathematics calls your attention to the perfect mathematical fact, so it is that any appearance of evil serves to call your attention to some specific aspect of good, or God. God is Perfection; thus Perfection is a universal as well as a specific fact. Any appearance of imperfection serves to call your attention to the perfect Principle, which is Perfection.

Evil Can Only Be Troublesome If You Think It Is Real

A mistake can seem to be troublesome, or evil, only so long as it is mistaken for a fact. One your attention is focused upon the perfect fact, the mistake is canceled. It simply vanishes.

You do not resist the mistake (evil). You do not attempt to overcome it, or to oppose it. You know it to be a mistake, and that ends it as far as you are concerned. The seeming evil served its purpose, and your attention is now focused upon the perfect Principle. You keep your attention focused upon the universal and the specific fast until the evidence of this fact is apparent.

You can never make a figure 5 become a figure 4. Neither can you make an appearance of imperfection become perfect. Your awareness of Perfection is the revelation and the evidence of that which is revealed.

You Are Always Abundantly Supplied

For example, it may appear that an appearance of lack seems to be present. This is not evil. Rather, it should be considered as merely the signal signifying the presence of infinite, omnipresent Supply, which means that you will immediately contemplate the universal fact – omnipresent Supply.

When you are constantly and consciously attentive to the perfect fact – and only this fact – the evidence of its presence is inevitable.

The New Year You Should Be Celebrating

be happy now

This excerpt is from the Monthly Letters of Alfred Aiken.

Do not “begin” this new year by making yourself all sorts of promises as to what you will, or will not do. Rather, treat it as any other “day,” by stating the WHOLENESS OF LOVE, THE SINGLENESS OF INFINITY, THE ENTIRETY OF THE ONE ALONE OMNIPRESENT EXISTENCE HERE-NOW-IN-ITS-UNCHALLENGED FULNESS!

Yes, we are entering a new year, according to the “passage of time,” but only there. NOW cannot pass, any more than it can come. NOW IS, and this is the accurate definition of CHANGELESS ETERNITY, IMMORTALITY, ALLNESS TOTALLY FUNCTIONING AS THE SOLE AWARENESS-THAT-IS-INDIVIDUAL-I. To this ONE OMNIPOTENT WISDOM there is no smaller “I”, no greater, or other, “I.” There is but ONE ABSOLUTE EXISTENCE, AWARENESS, MIND ALIVENESS, CONSCIOUSNESS being!

Where does this leave “matter,” and all that is based on the atom, on “construction,” on time, on duality, multiplicity, age, decay, fertility, fertilizer, or the need for death as an adjunct to life? It leaves it just where it belongs, namely, wholly alone

This is the NEW YEAR you should be celebrating. How? BY BEING THE ONE YOU BE, or, in other words, discontinue your fight against being the ONE YOU ETERNALLY AM! Stop trying to “bring perfection about,” but rather behold that SPIRIT IS SINGLE, AND THERE IS NOTHING OPPOSING OR CHALLENGING TRUTH, THE SELF.

SPIRIT IS WHO AND WHAT YOU BE, AND THERE IS NO SECOND “YOU’ AT ALL. THERE IS ONLY THIS ONE, AND IT IS PERFECT NOW, AND KNOWS IT. THIS LEAVES NO OTHER MIND AT ALL, HENCE NO OTHER TO KNOW, OR THAT NEEDS TO KNOW… THE ONE THAT IS, I, KNOWS! THE ONE THAT IS, IS, NOW. THIS IS THE NEW YEAR, NEVER REPEATING ITSELF – THIS IS THE FOREVER “NEW” NOW, NEVER “REPEATING,” OR DUPLICATING ITSELF.

It’s Not Coming … It’s Already Here

earth heat logo

Please Do This

To get the full impact of this short post, pause and look around you. If you can, go to a nearby window and look outside. Look at the world.

This world that you see is the very world where God is All. Now, I am asking that you say (aloud), “This right here is the world where God is the only Presence and the Only Power. This world right here is the Allness of God.” Trust me, there is a method to my madness.

There Are No Buts In God’s Allness

Reader, here’s why I asked you to do this. With heartfelt sincerity people often profess, “I know that God is the only Presence, but ….” It’s the “but” that betrays their belief that either there is another world (and usually they’re in it) where God is not All, or that in this world there is another presence and power other than God.

There is no other world!

What A Wonderful World

The world that you see, right now, is the only world there is. It is the world where God Is All. This is the world that is constituted of Love and Perfection.

Despite the appearances of wars, violent hatred and shortages, this is the One World – the literal Kingdom of Heaven. It may look like a world of matter, but it is not. It may seem as though the world is going to hell in a gasoline basket, but it’s not. It may appear as though material laws hold sway. They don’t.

In this world, God is both the seer and the seen. Contemplate this fact. As my mother used to say, “It will do you a world of good.” For the next seven days, contemplate all of the Truths in this article. The revelations and experiences that come forth will be WONDERFUL.

Your Good Can Never Be Depleted

201501_Abundant_Life

Last week I received a short handwritten note asking me to please share more of Gertrude Gephart’s writings on the blog. Below are carefully selected quotes from Ms. Gephart.

Everything is perfect even in our apparently material world, for this very world we walk in is our view of reality. It is the reflection of reality. It is our interpretation of God, of Truth which is all. To perceive this makes our good permanent. This understanding makes us quiet down and seek God and cease to look for demonstrations and miracles. In Him, all fulness of every kind of good dwells.

This world, if judged as it appears, is the world of action, of doing, of getting. We have to find the Sabbath’s day rest, the rest, the peace, of being rather than the strife of doing and getting. Perception of being takes care of doing and getting.

A certain student told her teacher, at various times, of her demonstrations over accidents, and at last he said, “This is all very well, but you should not continually have accidents to demonstrate over and out of. You are the Truth, and you cannot see evil or accidents. You cannot see a near-accident, for a near-accident is a unreal as an actual accident.”

Really when you spend money, you do not take it our of your pocket book or your bank account, though you may seem to. It comes forth from the absolute good. It comes from the body of the Christ, and that store of good can never be depleted, for it is infinite, it is limitless, it is omnipresent. Actually it is your food and clothing; it is beauty and life itself. It is the raw material of everything and it is the finished product.

We say, I bought shoes, so I cannot have a new dress or a trip out of town.” But really the shoes and the new dress and the trip out of town all come froth from the invisible absolute good, and this good can never be depleted. The shoes do not infringe upon the dress, nor the dress does not subtract from the trip.

You yourself are the only thing there is. You can’t and don’t gain anything. You can’t and don’t lose anything. Loss is hypnosis. Knowing the Truth does not add anything to your being. You are the All whether you know it or not, but as much as you perceive of this, you bring into your practical experience. The Truth we know works like yeast; it is alive. In fact Jesus called it leaven. We do not have to know how it works, or even to know that it works. If is life and it brings forth after its kind.

Empowering Truths From Ms. Gephart

Truth-2

Because Gertrude Gephart’s writings are tinged with dualism, I seldom quote her. However, as you can see for yourself, her writings are undoubtedly inspirational. Below are some excerpts from her book “The Way Of Life.” I have emphasized noteworthy statements.

If we look upon appearances and accept them, we are bearing false witness. The human self, as we see it, is not real at all. Jesus was continually admonishing his disciples to deny themselves. When enlightenment came to Gautama Buddha, he said, “The self (that is the human concept) does not exist. Truth (the Great Self) is all.”

If we can see that as a limited human identity, we do not exist, we can see that we and all are Truth, and this is bearing true witness.

We do not need to blame ourselves for our mishaps either. How shall we think, then? That the mishaps and misfortunes are not real nor actual, but right where they seem to be, right there is the presence of absolute good.

Mr. Rawson would tell us to describe the kingdom of heaven to ourselves, and to know that it is where our fears seem to be. Your misfortunes have no history at all. At any moment they can be healed instantly and perfectly, now matter what the seeming cause or history.

We only have to know the Truth. We do not have to get behind it to make it operate; it does not have to be stimulated or insisted upon. There is an expression in the Sanscrit – “by mere knowledge”, all demonstration is by mere knowledge.

If you added a column of figures incorrectly, you could change the result by mere knowledge. So we correct our experience by the knowledge that the Self is all.

We deal only with the Lord and not with people. One who has not had some experience in the power of understanding to correct one’s life would never dream what this one piece of information will do for him.

If one were buying a garment from a salesman in a great department store, he would seem to be dealing with the salesman. But if the garment were unsatisfactory, or if the salesman had misrepresented it, he would go higher than the salesman. He would remember that he was dealing with the owner of the store.

We must remember that we are dealing always, and only, with the Lord. When we remember this, we lose our fear of people, of competition, of unemployment.

Don’t Shortchange Yourself

This excerpt is by Lillian DeWaters from her pamphlet The Time Is At Hand.

Why Do This To Yourself?

Why stop at saying that the Truth of things is perfect and that Heaven is Perfect in Itself, when it is your self, your body and your experience which you wish to see picture forth the “Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory?”

Open your vision to the fact that there is only one Being, and that this is your Being. For Being is not dual. Claim the completeness, the infinity, the perfection of your entire Being which includes your Body

Hold The High Watch

All creation is ideal, lovely, enchanting and satisfying. There are really no “others,” for in your universe you stand as one with all. In such realization of Yourself as The One there is no mistake to be corrected, no sickness to be healed, no person to be redeemed.

The seeming problem disappears: simply to withdraw from all belief of duality, multiplicity and sense of otherness, and to hold the High Watch, brings instead the vision of the completeness and infinity of all Good, all Health, all Abundance, all Joy now here and anywhere.

In proportion as one can rise to perform this act of the Truth can he fulfill the commission “Heal the sick and raise the dead.” And who are the sick? Who are the dead? Verily, who can they be and where can they exist if the Self be ALL? The commission is fulfilled in Revelation.

This Is The Best Way To Live (Don’t You Agree?)

To win the victory over sickness and suffering is not the best proof of God’s Allness. To never be sick in the first place is better proof.

To triumph over financial lack is not the best proof of God’s Infinite Substance. To never experience a moment of lack is better proof.

To finally succeed after years of failure is not the best proof of God’s Completeness (Success). To never fail is better proof.

You Don’t Need Jams To Prove God’s Allness

Too many people seem to think that getting out of a thorny jam is a trophy-worthy demonstration of God’s Allness. I met a man who appears to court trouble just to prove his understanding of God’s Allness.

If you came out of a jam unscathed, that’s wonderful. But there is a better way – a higher way! Reader, lift your vision high – above trials, tribulations and troubles – to where God Is All. From this vantage point, can you see that the best demonstration of God’s Allness is to never be in trouble?

Living From Glory To Glory

Rather than triumphing over troubles, expect a life of moving from glory to glory. That’s the best proof of God’s Allness. After all, God is the only presence, power, activity, and evidence. And you already know that there is no trouble in God, and no God in trouble.

Have A Talk With Yourself

Don’t be afraid to tell yourself the Truth. In a quiet moment, speak courageously and confidently to yourself. Tell yourself, “I know that God Is All, and that All Is God. I don’t need to be miraculously pulled out of trouble’s steely clutches to know that God Is All. God does not need to be proved. Because God Is All, it is my right to live a trouble-free life.”

No Guilt Allowed

If you seem to be in trouble, don’t whip yourself with cords of guilt. The purpose of this writing is not to induce guilt, but rather

  • to consider the fact that you do not need trouble(s) in order to “prove” your understanding of God.
  • to consider that because God Is All, it is possible to live a trouble-free life.
  • to lift your vision higher than trouble-based praying.
