Understand Your Desire
It’s a joy to answer this question: “Allen, how can I have a deeper prayer experience?” The right answer will spit-polish your prayer life and steer you into a more fulfilling living experience.
Do you know why you crave a deeper prayer experience? The answer is simple. It’s your God-nature insisting on revealing Itself as your one and only Identity.
You think you want a deeper prayer experience, but you’re misinterpreting the desire. The desire has nothing to do with prayer and everything to do with God’s Allness. Prayer, as a spiritual practice, is not the end “goal.” Prayer is a tool to get you there. The end goal (and I know the word “goal” sounds dualistic) is a complete experience of God as All.
Pure Prayer Is The Way
Pure prayer can and will deliver the experience you seek. Prayer that is not tainted with selfish motives is pure prayer—true prayer. Before you pray, contemplate, or meditate, ask yourself, “Why am I doing this? What am I expecting from this prayer?” If your honest answer is something other than the realization of God, your prayer is tainted and spotted with selfishness. Nothing much will come from it.
Forgiveness Eliminates Duality
Here’s another question: How are you doing on the forgiveness front? Some people say they are not willing to forgive and have no intention of ever forgiving their offender. Yet, they pray every day. Here are Christ’s words to them: “And when you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him….” (Mark 11:25).
Forgiveness is first; prayer is second. For effective prayer, you cannot reverse the order. It would be easier for a dog to fly than for you to realize Oneness while clinging to duality. Holding on to the idea of both offender and offended is duality.
If you cannot forgive, at least enter prayer with the willingness to forgive.
You Are The Truth You Seek
These are the last questions. I promise. Do you think God (Truth) is outside of you? Do you find yourself glancing “heavenward” when you think or talk of God? If you think God or Truth is outside of you, you’ve placed time and space as obstacles to your so-called enlightenment.
Most likely you are aware of Christ Jesus saying, “The Kingdom of God is within you.” That’s true. Even truer is the fact that All Truth is within you. All Truth and all True experience is inherent in the I AM that You Are. Truth is the Substance of your Being. The deeper God experience you crave is within you right now. Your spiritual practice is simply excavating the Divine Splendor that is already present.
Here are the points to remember:
- It’s not about prayer. It’s about God’s Allness.
- Prayer is a tool—nothing more.
- Forgive.
- There’s no need to reach out for Truth. It is the Substance of your Being.
