In Christ Jesus’ most famous open-air sermon (the Sermon on the Mount), he said to his disciples, “You are the light of the world.” Was Christ charging his disciples with the responsibility to enlighten the world with this new teaching? Many Bible scholars believe so.
Digging deeper into his words, you’ll discover that Christ was turning their attention – and yours as well – to the immensity of their True Identity.
“God is light and in him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). These words mean exactly what they say. God is Light.
Imagine your bedroom flooded with a light so bright and brilliant you can’t distinguish the distinct shapes of the objects in the room. Divine Light is similar to that.
God’s Light is present everywhere. But the truth is, God’s Light is the everywhere, the Substance of everything and everyone. Yes, this Light is the Substance of You. Can you accept this? If so, it’s easy to perceive that You are Light. For now, don’t try to see this Light; just accept that it is.
Right now, you are in a wonderful position to take a giant leap of understanding. You are Light, and you can accept that. But do you think this means you are a separate lamp of Living Light? If so, let’s look at this from a grander view. For that, we have to go to the beach.
Picture it. You’re standing at the shore with an eyedropper in your hand. You bend down and draw up a single drop of water out of the ocean. Humor me and name that drop “Billy.”
Billy, as you know, has all of the properties of the ocean, but now he’s separated from it. In that separation, he’s not what he used to be. Billy doesn’t have the size or power of the ocean supporting him, nor is his movement assisted by the motion of the water.
Yet what happens when you drop Billy back into the ocean? Here’s a clear explanation. “When a drop of water returns to the ocean, it instantly loses its identity as a separate drop … becoming a part of the ocean’s enormous volume.”
Please read that quote again. It is the key to Self-understanding. You are the Light of the world, but you are not a separate little lamp of Living Light.
You are the Light of the world because of your Oneness “with” God. In this Oneness, you lose all sense of separation and are now the grand Ocean of Living Light that is God’s Presence. In your awareness of Oneness, you are the Light that is the entirety of existence.
“But Allen, what about the other people I see and know?” There’s one loving answer to this question.
Mis-perceived, those so-called others are separate little lamps of Living Light. Rightly perceived, they are, like you, the same grand Ocean of Living Light. Rightly perceived otherness has been replaced with Oneness. [Be clear: You do not lose your individuality in Oneness, but you do lose your separation.]
In a nutshell, your Oneness with (as) God is your Oneness with and as all Life. This is true Love.
