Absolutely Yours

In the last post, I quoted verse two (2) of The Gospel of Thomas:

Let him who seeks, not cease from his search until he finds. When he finds; he will be bewildered, and when bewildered he will wonder and reign over the all.

Another translation reads:

Let him who seeks cease not to seek until he finds: when he finds he will be astonished; and when he is astonished he will wonder and will reign over all.

The Seeking Stage Is Just The Beginning

All of us start this so-called spiritual journey as seekers. In the beginning, we are seeking to know and experience God. Or, we seek realization of some specific truth. Whichever the case, the seeking phase is the start of a wonder-filled life.

We don’t stay there. No sincere “seeker of Truth” should be content as a mere seeker, nor should one spend their entire life seeking God. Sincere seeking always results in finding God. For this reason, when you turn your heart to the knowledge and experience of God, don’t stop “seeking” until you find.

In some spiritual circles, so-called seekers pride themselves on being dedicated seekers. They deify the seeking stage as if seeking is the goal. As a result, they joyfully spend a lifetime seeking without ever finding.

To Christ, this is unacceptable. He says, “Let him who seeks, not cease from his search until he finds.” Don’t stop until you find. The road may seem long and meandering – sometimes even disheartening, but keep going until you find. You will find.

It’s Not Difficult. It’s Motive

Are you thinking, “Allen, it’s difficult. I’ve been seeking all my life and have come up with nothing. I wouldn’t say it’s been a waste of time, but I can’t say that I’ve gotten much out of it either.”

I hear something like this more times than I care to count. But peeking behind the curtain of their words, I always find that they were seeking God for some thing, or for the resolution of some difficulty. God Realization was never the focus. In short, they weren’t seeking God. Again, seeking God always results in finding God.

Bewildered And Briefly Bothered

Next comes a tsunami of emotions. Read the verse. It says when you find, you will first be bewildered or astonished. Then you will wonder. All of this will happen simultaneously.

One of the definitions of bewildered is to cause to lose one’s bearings. Have you ever lost your bearings? You know the feeling. It’s like being lost. Imagine wandering around Hobart (Australia) thinking you are in a section of your hometown. Nothing looks familiar. You wander up and down the streets looking for a familiar site. Yet, you cannot find one. You’ve lost your bearings. You are bewildered. This is the type of bewilderment Christ speaks of.

Seeking God always leads to finding God. But in finding God, all that was familiar in a material (human) sense of self and existence is nowhere to be found. Once, you seemed to walk in an earthly kingdom quite familiar with its roller-coaster experiences of highs and lows, pleasures and pains, etc. No more. You’re walking in Truth – as Truth Itself. The discovery that You are the Truth you’ve been seeking may be disorienting for a moment. But you quickly recover.

Reading Truth Has Its Place, But It Won’t Do This

The following must be pointed out. Reading Truth may motivate you. To a degree, it may stir your soul. Certainly it will inspire you. But reading Truth will never bewilder, or astonish you. It will never cause you to lose your bearing. Only God found, or Truth realized, will do this. The same Truth that stirred your soul and inspired you when read, will astonish you when Revealed in “your” Consciousness.

Kingship Is A Matter Of Consciousness

Bewilderment is not a stopping point. It’s a brief phase. Finally, the promise is that you will “reign over all.” Like a king reigns over his kingdom, Christ says that you will reign over all. As heart-lifting as this sounds, there is a hint of dualism here. Believe me, it’s not intended. Christ knew that there is One Infinite, Indivisible Presence. He knew there was no other to reign over. Therefore, this reigning and ruling business must be a matter of Conscious Awareness.

You Are Not A Victim

Not too long ago, I faced a seemingly insurmountable problem. To resolve it, I had to jump through many bureaucratic hoops. The hoops, however, were not there. The pandemic closed many offices, and appointments were hard to schedule.

Left unresolved, the problem was costing me hundreds of dollars. I should’ve known better, but I tried everything humanly possible. Once the human sense of things gets involved, nothing gets resolved. Exasperated, I stopped all effort and prayed.

Troubles, no matter what they appear to be, indicate a God-Truth waiting to be revealed. In silence, I listened. These words flashed in my consciousness: I AM NOT A VICTIM. Immediately I knew that this I AM is the Infinite I AM that I AM. I perceived that Infinity cannot be victimized by a non-existent other. In that moment of realization, I was free from all concern. By the next afternoon, everything was resolved.

To “reign over all” is to realize that You are the All. You are the Infinite, Indivisible All. This is True Dominion. Here there is no other. Here there is nothing to victimize or traumatize you. There is Love, Oneness.

This verse from The Gospel of Thomas is a lesson in spiritual dominion. Let’s review the phases.
