“Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father-in-law … and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt (Exodus 3:1-3).”
Perhaps there is no episode in the Bible that is more fraught with spiritual significance as is the foregoing experience of Moses and the burning bush that did not burn.
The fire was the signal to attract the attention of Moses. Although the fire appeared to be a destructive presence, it was really a signal signifying the presence of God. The fire, destructive element, was not real. It had no actual existence. But God, signified by the fire, was and is genuine.
“And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, here am I. And he said, Draw not night hither, put off thy shoes from off thy fee, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground (Exodus 3:4-5).”
Right where the destructive appearance of the fire seemed to be, there was God. The “holy ground” upon which Moses stood was the whole, absolute, pure Truth. Holy Ground denotes the Substance that is God and God alone.
The bush symbolizes the eternal, immutable, indestructible Substance which is the only Substance in existence. It represents the Substance of you and everyone.
The indestructible, imperishable, eternal Substance which constitutes your Body and mine is never penetrated or invaded by any destructive appearance. No matter how threatening some false evidence may seem to be or how real it may seem, the Substance of the Body remains immune to and untouched by the fallacious evidence.
It is always false evidence. This means that it is not evidence of anything real. Actually, it is evidence of “nothing” or “no thing,” thus it is no evidence at all. When we know, really know, the nature of all Substance, we are no longer deceived by fallacious evidence. We cannot fear it. We just know, and nothing can convince us that there is any substance other than God being that Substance.
False evidence cannot deceive or disturb anyone who know that which is true. One who knows, and knows that he knows, never seeks to find a cause for fallacious evidence. He never asks, “Why did this happen to me?” or “What is the cause of this?” He is wholly and completely convinced of the nothingness of an imperfect appearance, and he is concerned only with the genuine and only Substance and activity which does exist.
There is no false evidence. The only thing false about any evidence is our misinterpretation of that which is already perfect, right here and now. For the purpose of clarity, we do speak of false evidence. But don’t be deceived. The only evidence in existence is perfect evidence. It has to be perfect because God is all there is to be evidenced.
Always remember, “The place whereon thou standest is holy ground.” Right where you are, there is God and God alone. But this is not all. God is what you are. Your Body cannot be left out of what you are. If something should appear that seems to be evil, be assured that it cannot be what it seems to be. Rightly perceived, it is but a signal, drawing your attention to the Good, God, that is the entirety of your Being and Body.
