I FORGIVE (Part 2)

Now that you are willing to forgive, it’s time to clear the decks of three self-defeating ideas – false beliefs that could stand in the way of forgiveness. They are:

  • Someone blocked your opportunity.
  • Someone stole a sum of money from you.
  • Someone withheld love.

Let’s examine each one of them.

Someone blocked your opportunity

Who gave them the power to block your good? I will answer that question with a quote from the Holy Bible: “According to your belief is it done unto you.”

Opportunity is as infinite and omnipresent as God, for God is the Substance of all opportunity. They are as boundless as God and are not governed by time, age, location, etc. Furthermore, you and God are One. You are one with unlimited opportunities; for that reason they cannot be blocked or stolen.

Someone stole a large sum of money from you

If money was stolen from you, why are you upset? “Allen, now I’m out of $5,000.” That’s not a good answer.

The stolen money did not decrease your financial prosperity one cent. God is, and has forever been, both the Source and Substance of your prosperity. Can God be diminished? Can God be stolen? Remember, you and God are One. For this reason, your abundant Supply is forever intact. Is this clear to you? If it is, forgive the offender. Their actions did not affect your Supply. Your Supply is always abundantly present wherever you are.

Someone stopped loving you

For whatever reason, you feel someone has stopped loving you, and now your love tank is on empty.

Once a man told me his wife ran off with his business partner. It’s been decades, and he is still nursing the wounds of betrayal and lost love. A woman once told me how her friend from church ran off with her husband. It’s been twenty years and she still tells the story to anyone willing to listen.

I hear these stories all the time. In each case the betrayed one feels an “alienation of affection” and a loss of love. Let’s, however, look at the facts.

God is Love, and you and God are One. You are Love. You are the presence of all the Love you could ever desire, and when you know this, Love will flesh Itself out in ways that are tailor-made for you. In short, forgive the “other” person. They took nothing from you.

Getting Down To The Business Of Forgiving

Now it’s time to get on with true forgiving. All you are doing in this “process” is eliminating otherness – other than God, and other than You. Why is this necessary? Because you cannot profess that God is the only Presence and continue to have a presence other than God.

Reader, the steps that follow are suggestions to be tailored as you are guided from within.

  1. Find a comfortable spot, free of distractions.
  2. Allow yourself to sink into the idea that God (Love, Perfection) is and always has been the only Presence and Power.
  3. Take this a step further and acknowledge God to be all there is of your Identity.
  4. Now advance further. As God is All, acknowledge that, despite all appearances, God is all there is of the Identity you are forgiving.
  5. For a minute or so, be silent and listen to the voice of your God Consciousness.
  6. Repeat these five steps until you perceive the true nature of your Self and the Self of the person you are forgiving – until you know there is just One, and that One is God.

How Do You Forgive In Extreme Cases Such As Abuse And Rape?

Google these names, and you will read about so-called extreme cases of forgiveness.

Cases like these can either crush you or push you to new heights of God realization and power-filled living. Are you ready to be pushed? Before I offer a suggestion on how to forgive when it seems impossible to forgive, I am going to tell you why you should forgive.

The memory of past abuse is like a ghost haunting your present days. You don’t know the exact day or time, but the haunting can be paralyzing. But, you have immediate access to an effective ghostbuster: forgiveness.

In challenging cases of forgiveness, there are two essential requirements:

  • Willingness to see the person differently.
  • Willingness to see the event differently.

You, however, are not personally responsible for determining what the “differently” is. Realization makes that determination.

Are You Willing To See The Person Differently?

Your perception of the offender is mostly tainted by their offense. On occasion you may have thought they should be strung up by their ankles until blood runs out of their eye sockets.

Your former thoughts about your offender don’t matter. Here’s what matters: Are you willing to see this person differently? Are you willing to perceive their spiritual reality? If your answer is “yes,” you can move forward in a way that can close and erase the emotional wounds.

What I am suggesting here will work. Have a dedicated “prayer” period to answer this one question: What is it I need to see concerning (name of person)?

You may have to do this many times before the answer is revealed. Keep at it, and remember you are asking the God of your Being. You will gain a true perception of the individual, and yourself, that unshackles you from the past and elevates all of your current and future relationships.

Are You Willing To See The Event Differently?

If you are, the suggestion that follows will take your forgiveness to a place humanly unimaginable. Do this and you will never have to forgive anyone again. That’s a promise. What is revealed in your Consciousness will stick with you for the rest of your Eternal Life.

The question you will ask of your Self is: Concerning (name the event), what really happened here?

Again, you may have to ask this many times, but the answer will blaze forth in your Consciousness.

Reader, in these two posts on forgiveness, you have all you need to forgive – to exchange twoness for the genuine experience of Oneness – which is God.

A Clarence Steves Post

A few weeks ago, I had a joyful conversation with one of our readers from Sweden (or was it Switzerland). Although it was our first conversation, it was like talking to an old friend. The conversation jumped all over the place, but we landed on a mutual love and admiration for Clarence Steves. Mr. Steves was a well-respected Christian Science Practitioner and Teacher and the author of one book, Selected Addresses of Clarence Steves. It’s available at Amazon.com. Below are excerpts from that book.

Never Come Into The Problem

In any problem, immediately see the impossibility of it from the standpoint of the allness and oneness of the divine Principle, Love. If possible, never come into the problem, but see the truth so vividly that the aggressive mental suggestion as the problem is dissolved.

All You Have To Do Is Let Go

A lecturer recently told of a group of hunters, hunting for live monkeys. They found that monkeys like wild rice. They obtained some coconuts, cut small holes in them and filled them with rice. In the morning, they found a group of forlorn looking monkeys, each with a tightly closed hand full of rice inside the coconut, unable to get them out.

They had only to let go of the handful of rice, and would have had instantaneous liberation, or what our movement calls healing. Are we hanging on to the handful of rice in our own little coconut? Does material existence mean more to us than spiritual existence? How are we identifying ourselves?

Your Senses Are God’s Senses

Make the declaration, “My senses cannot be perverted and see persons, places and things, for my senses are God’s senses and see only as God sees.”

Don’t Talk Christ, Live Christ!

Live the ascension. It’s so simple. It simply means the acknowledgement that Mind, God, is present, expressing itself; it simply means that there’s one Life present, identifying itself. That’s all there is to the ascension. You don’t have to die to get there. Paul said, “I die daily.” So if we would live this Christ, we would never have discordant things that seem to happen in our lives. Live it, but don’t talk it.

Don’t Forget To Shut The Door

Prayer is shutting the door on the possibility of the problem. Become so conscious of the oneness, the allness of divine Love that the problem, the patient, the practitioner, all disappear, and leave only the Love of God experiencing its own loveliness.

What Kind Of Body Will Knowing Give You?

“Take no thought for your life,” because Jesus permitted the Christ to be so real, so tangible, that he had no temptation to believe in a personal body with a finite, temporal sense of life. Has he not said, “I am come that ye might have life, and have it more abundantly”? Not simply a hundred years; but life eternal — life that has nothing to do with birth, forever untouched by death. If eating is supposed to give forth body, then stop and see what kind of body we must have from our knowing? Knowing constructs the only body there is. Body is not a human fabrication. Body is not material. There is no material body to be sick or to grow old. There is a belief that body is material, that it needs to be healed. If you believe that matter is substance, and holds within itself the ability to give life or take it, then you are in a hopeless situation. It becomes a tyrant, a dictator; it says it is thirsty, give me a drink; hungry, give me some food. It says give me glasses so I can see better; give me a car to haul me around; give me money so I can do what I want. Have you such a tyrant hanging around, calling itself you?

If It’s Real, It’s Love

Divine Mind is All-in-all, and we must make every experience, every situation, every happening declare for God, divine Love. When we look it straight in the face, we can say to any happening, “If you are real, if you are true, then you have the magnificence of Love; if you have any action, then it is Love-action; if you have any life, then it is Love-Life.” In other words, make every experience declare God, Love — divine Principle!

Conclusion

Someone once wrote, “Certain things catch your eye, but pursue only those that catch your heart.” Did any of the above citations catch your heart? Consider prayerfully “pursuing” them. Pick the line or phrase that caught your heart and spend time with it. Contemplate the many ideas contained in it. Sit in silence and let new insights flood your Consciousness. They will.

This Is True Love

Will Someone Please Tell Me What Love Is?

Recently a reader wrote in stating that no writer actually tells you what Love is. “They write,” she says, “lots of words about Love, but something is always missing.” The writers tell you to be more loving. They even quote the Holy Bible which tells us to love God and love your neighbor as yourself, but the writers never tell you what Love is. In this post, let’s examine Love and get a clearer sense of what Love is, and be better Lovers.

Here’s a certainty: Everyone wants to Love and be Loved. Have you ever heard anyone say that they don’t want to be Loved? To love and be loved, according to Psychologist Abraham Maslow, is one of the basic “human” drives. A spiritual principle underlies this drive.

An Expression Of Love Is Not Love

Take a moment to think about the many expressions of Love. It can be anything from a young child hugging his nana to a couple making love. Perhaps a picture comes to mind of a mother breastfeeding her baby, or a daughter changing her elderly mother’s diaper. These appear as loving acts, but none of them are Love. They are expressions of Love seen through the filter of a seemingly relative world. More simply, they are expressions of Love seen through the lens of dualism.

God Is Love

The Holy Bible clearly states “God is love” (1 John 4:8). This fact moves us in the direction of understanding Love for what it is. God is one Infinite, Indivisible Presence. The important word here is one. Love is Oneness. Love is Living Oneness. Seen through the lens of dualism, Love appears as kind and loving acts. Seen as it Is (Illumined Seeing), Love is seen and experienced as One moving, living Presence.

You’ve heard it said that your neighbor is your Self. You’ve also been counseled to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Doesn’t this verse from the Holy Bible make more sense when you consider your neighbor is your Self? To Love is to first understand how your neighbor is your Self.

The Ocean Of Love

Just as the wave is the ocean and the ocean is the wave, so it is that You and God is one – the same One. You are not merely a wave in the Ocean of God; you are the Ocean Itself. This is true of your neighbor and all the Identities walking the face of this planet. Each is the Infinity of God.

Each wave is distinctly that wave yet is inseparable from every other wave. Your Identity is distinctly your Identity but is inseparable from every so-called other Identity.

You may count a thousand waves in the ocean, but each wave is nothing but the one ocean. Each Identity is the one Ocean of God. The Infinity of your Identity includes (or is) the Infinity of your neighbor’s Identity. You are the same One.

The Ocean of God is a living Presence. The Ocean of God is an active Presence. In human terms, this living, acting One is called Love.

How To Be A Better Lover

It’s time to get busy Loving. Below are three (3) suggestions for living the Love life:

Your Identity is Infinity
When you first open your eyes in the morning, remind yourself that you are Infinity Itself – that your Being is all Being. (You can’t say this as a human being – but you already know that.)
I AM that I AM
As you go about your day, look around you. Randomly pick something or someone and know I AM that I AM.
Switch It Around
Look at someone or something and know “That I AM is the I AM that I AM.”

Take these suggestions to heart and you will move beyond the duality of “one with,” to the reality of just One. Follow these suggestions and life will be a thrilling adventure in Love.

Forgiveness and Healing

let-it-go-1

“Sir, I have heard you say that if a person has been diagnosed with an incurable disease, they should get busy forgiving everyone that they can think of. Why is that so important to you?”

I didn’t originate this idea. Christ Jesus did. Read his words:

“And when you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father may forgive you.” [Mark 11:25]

This implies that forgiveness is the first and most essential step for successful prayer. Let’s go behind Jesus’ wise counsel and get at the heart of it, as it relates to healing.

Forgivness Is Oneness — An Essential For Healing

In any case of disease, whether curable or incurable, there is (or seems to be) the belief that the disease is a power, and it can wreak havoc on the body’s health. The Truth is, God is the only Power (Doer).

In any case of unforgiveness, the one who clings to past offenses and refuses to forgive believes that someone or something had power to wreak havoc in their life. “Look what she did to me. My life is in ruins because of it. You can understand, can’t you, why I won’t forgive her?” Yet, that person, and the thing they did, never had power to do anything. God was and is the only power in and as the life of the non-forgiving person.

What Is Spiritual Healing?

Spiritual healing is the Realization of God as the only Presence and Power. That Realization is impossible while holding on to the idea that something (fill in any name here) has power. Spiritual healing is a near impossibility while consciously holding on to past hurts.

Spiritual healing is the Realization of Oneness. While holding on to past hurts and offenses, you are holding on to twoness. Spiritual healing is impossible while clinging to dualism.

Really Good Sex (One Body)

blog

This article is a reprint. Somehow it disappeared from our archive. I am reprinting it because some have asked about it, and it was the most popular blog post.

I don’t pretend to understand all of the implications of this experience, but one thing I do know: This is Real Sex.

It started like this. There was a pretty woman who caught my eye and heart. And there was a strong sexual attraction too. We hung out for weeks, perhaps months, but things never moved beyond just hanging out together. As you would expect, the more we were around each other (almost daily) I urgently wanted things to get physical. It never happened.

This woman attended the church I pastored, and we were spiritually compatible. This added to the attraction.

One night, close to midnight, we were walking around Lake Montebello, no hugging, no hand-holding, just walking as we usually did. As we walked…suddenly…and for a fraction of a millisecond (though it seemed like hours) our two bodies that seemed material and separate were pure Light and just one.

To describe the feeling, it was like a sizzling current shot through my body. I thought to myself, “This is what a real orgasm feels like.”After that experience, I no longer desired a sexual relationship with her. This was the ultimate. Nothing more was needed.

I realized that the joining together of two separate human bodies in the sex act is a crude attempt to get at the reality of the Infinite, Inseparable Body of Oneness. From that day to this day, I’ve desired to experience this One-Body more so than the sex act. Why? Because I know that the appearance of separate bodies is not the reality.

That night I knew that this woman would be a part of my life forever. Reader, this experience happened over 17 years ago, and today we are still the best of friends. In many of my lectures, I often say, “This was the best sex I ever had, and she knew nothing about it.”

What’s Happening In Your Life?

never

Really, It Never Happened

Tucked in the fourth paragraph of the previous post are three words that, surprisingly, didn’t rankle our readers. Referring to the hurricanes, and the destruction that followed, I wrote, “it never happened.” Yes, I meant exactly what I wrote, and the following story will help to clarify that statement.

The hurricane blew so violently that day in New England that it toppled a chimney which fell on Charles, breaking his collarbone and severing an artery in his foot. The doctor told him that he would have to wear a cast for six weeks.

While lying in his hospital bed, a brilliant flash of insight blazed in Charles’ consciousness: “If, in divine order, there had never been an accident, no bone had been broken. Therefore, I do not need to wait for the collarbone to knit together.” In other words, Charles realized IT NEVER HAPPENED.

Start Right, And You End Right

Starting from God (Spirit) being all there is, the appearance of an accident, resulting in crushed and broken bones, would be a miracle. “Accidents,” as Mary Baker Eddy said, “are unknown to God.” What I’m driving at is this: If it is not God in action, it’s not happening, and it never happened.

Over the years I’ve read and heard stories of people who were in accidents that left them hopelessly disfigured and crippled. According to medical assessment, these people were told they would have to live with these afflictions for the rest of their lives. Yet, after realizing more fully that the One Presence in action is the only activity, they were healed. In these stories, each person declared the same thing – essentially, “I realized that it never happened.”

Distinguishing What’s Real

Only what’s real ever happens. This is a fact. So, the first order of business is to distinguish what’s real from what appears to be real. Take a look at this simple formula for determining what’s real.

  • First: Establish what you know to be the nature of God. Love, Light, Perfection, Infinite, Eternal, and most of all, Oneness.
  • Second: No matter what you seem to see (or sense), ask yourself, “Is it consistent with what I know God to be?” If the answer is “No,” then you know it is not real and it is not happening.

Imagine you’re in the workplace. It appears that two of your co-workers are in a squabble. Voices and fists are raised. Any moment fists could fly. This is the scene that the ears and eyes are reporting. Immediately, instead of standing there as a snooping spectator, you ask yourself, “Is this happening?” Right there you say, “No, it’s not happening. My eyes and ears are reporting two, but there is only One presence.” You stand firm knowing that Love (Oneness) is the only happening.

It seems amazing what happens next. Voices lower and fists relax. Apologies are exchanged. It’s over before it really gets started. Why? Because IT NEVER HAPPENED, and you knew it.

Start From God’s Allness

No matter how bad it looks or looked, judge not according to appearances. Start from God’s Allness. IT NEVER HAPPENED. Reader, can you, or anyone, suffer the consequences from what never happened?

A Tip For Better Performances

p

The Day Honey Came To Class

Honey (not her real name) maintains this tip changed her life. I can’t vouch for that, but what I do know is that when I met Honey, she was a part-time blues singer and a full-time government worker. Now, she is a much in-demand blues singer, and that takes all her time.

I met Honey when she attended a class I was teaching. Somehow we got off course and started talking about performing – a subject I know a lot about. As a child and teen, I enjoyed showing my skills at the piano. The years went by, and stepping into adulthood I also stepped into a fear of performing.

Eliminate This Duality and Enhance Every Performance

As a child, I rightly imagined people were impressed with my skills. Later, my perception flipped and I imagined that every time I sat down to play, people were looking for finger and memory slips and interpretive bungling. You see, reader, I was functioning from a false duality – (1) me and (2) the audience.

Once I caught the duality, everything changed. What I learned and shared with Honey, I keep in mind before every speaking engagement, and every piano performance.

Sometimes Talent Is Not Enough

Before I tell you the “secret,” let’s go to a concert. You’ve been there. You’ve seen some performances that grabbed you and wouldn’t let you go for weeks. And, you’ve also seen some performances you forgot before the curtain closed. For some reason you and the performer did not connect. What separates a good performer from a great one is connectability (not in dictionary).

I remember listening to a young girl play in a recital. Her fingers flew up and down the keyboard. She hit all the right notes. It was a dazzling display of virtuosity. Later her teacher asked a friend what he thought. “Unless she connects with the music, and then connects with the audience, she can forget a career.” Technically, this young lady improved by the hour, or so it seemed, but she couldn’t win first prize in any competition. Why? Because she didn’t connect.

It’s Better Than Connecting With An Audience

I’m writing this post for professional and lay speakers, musicians, and other public performers. Here’s the “secret” I shared with Honey. “When you go on stage, look around at the audience and know I AND THE AUDIENCE ARE ONE INSEPARABLE MIND, LIFE AND PRESENCE.” I call it hugging them with Truth. Better than connecting is the acknowledgment of ONENESS.

You can take this one step further by looking around and knowing that “Right here is one Indivisible presence and I am It.” This not only includes the audience, but the walls, floor, chairs and all.

Before your next performance, try it! It works!

The Truth About Gratitude

No-gratitude

The Editor Asks An Important Question About Gratitude

Brenda Becker, the indispensable editor of Absolutely Yours, asked me if gratitude is dualism. I promised her I’d write about it in the next post. What follows is not about gratitude expressed when someone does something nice for you? That’s a courtesy. I’m writing about gratitude expressed “to” God for “His manifold blessings.”

When I read Brenda’s question, I had flashbacks of my first days as minister of the Unity in Silver Spring church. At the close of the service we all held hands in a circle. A man led the closing prayer with these words “We are so grateful. We are so grateful. We are so grateful.” Every time he said the word grateful, the few and fine hairs on my back bristled. I felt the ghost of “ol’ time religion” in the room.

The Trinity Of Dualism

Webster’s definition of gratitude is riddled with dualism. Gratitude is defined as “appreciation of benefits received.” Do you see the dualism? Count them yourself: The receiver (1) is appreciative of the benefits (2) from the giver (3).

In our case, this trinity of dualism looks like (1) God, the giver (2) the gift, and (3) the receiver. If the gift is big enough, or comes right in the nick of time to avoid a calamity, the receiver may look heavenward and blurt out “Thank God.” Is this dualism? You bet.

Why? Because in most cases, the person who thanks God believes God to be something other than her own I AM. Look at it this way. Have you ever bought something nice for yourself – something you’ve been wanting for a long time? Did you thank yourself after purchasing it? Most likely not? We only thank so-called “others.”

Christ Jesus Explains His Expression Of Gratitude

The Abundance of Oneness can never be experienced in the human attitude of gratitude. The two are farther removed from one another as the earth is from the sun. Indivisible Oneness of existence is the reality of Being. Here there are no gifts, no giver, and no receiver. The Allness of God is All there is.

“But,” you ask, “didn’t Jesus thank God when he raised Lazarus?” Yes, he did, but take a look at the record. “And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, ‘Father, I thank You that You have heard me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.’”

Did you catch the reason he thanked God? Christ Jesus knew that many still believed that God was a separate Identity. He also knew they worshiped Him as a personal doer. He often said, “I of myself can do nothing,” but they insisted that Christ Jesus, of Himself, was the doer. Publicly thanking God was Christ’s way of diverting attention away from Himself as a personal doer to the eternal action of the One Presence and Power.

The Bottom Line

Here is the bottom line:
Gratitude expressed “to” God is dualism.
Being grateful that you know God Is All is not.

All You Need To Know About Your World

ww

Look Around You — Everything Is Wonderful

Wherever you are reading this post, stop and look around you. Soak in the environment. If you can step outside, do so. Look around you. Reader, this world that you are looking at is the world where God is All. This is the world where there is only One Presence, One Power, and One Identity.

Things Are Not What They Seem To Be

Many people say, “Allen I know God is the only presence and power.” Yet, let them keep talking and the conversation steers toward clashes in the home, clashes on the job, body aches, healthcare, bullies, how bad things have gotten, etc. Although they say God is the only Presence, their words reveal that they live in another world where God is not all.

Yes, reader, I know it appears (to some) that this is a material world, but it is not. I know it looks like material laws hold sway, but they do not.

God Is Both The Seer And The Seen

This world you are moving, living and breathing in is God being All. Truth-be-told, this is the world where God is both the seer and the seen. When I think about this so-called world, I often refer to it as a ready-to-take-out-the-oven, fully-baked world. It’s finished, complete, perfect and lacking nothing. This “world” is Perfection Itself – What a Wonderful World.

Reader, as soon as you are able, take a moment to contemplate what is presented in this post. Listen for further Revelation. The Revelations that come forth will be many and wonderful.
