The Way Out of Grief, Sadness, and Depression

smile happy looks good on you

Grief Is Unbearable Because …

Somehow the subject of death popped up in the conversation. Responding to the man sitting next to me, I said, “Should a loved one appear to die, the first thing I’d do is call a Practitioner.” A woman sitting at the other end of the table said, “It’s a little late for that, isn’t it?” Without a moment’s hesitation I said, “No! The seeming loss is bad enough, but the grief would be unbearable.”

Grief is unbearable because it is not a natural state of Mind (God). Mind’s natural state is unfettered revelry in Its unchallenged and unopposed Allness.

Reader, answer these questions:

  • Can you steadfastly be aware of Perfection’s unopposed Allness and entertain one moment of grief?
  • Can you bask in the awareness of Love’s boundless Allness and be sad?
  • Is it possible for you to dwell in the awareness of uninterrupted Completeness and be depressed?

Your Mind’s Natural State

Mind, the Mind you are, is this constant awareness of Perfection, Love and Completeness. This is “your” Mind’s natural state. Connect the dots and you clearly behold this fact: Joy is the natural state of the Mind that you are.

The bleak greyness of grief is like a millstone around the neck of joy, drowning it in a sea of sadness. And, sometimes the pull of grief seems inescapable. Many people ask, “Allen, don’t you think there are times when grief is justified? After all, even psychologists talk about the stages of grief.”

What Do The Psychologists Know

Reader, perhaps you have asked the same question. But ask yourself this, “What mind are the psychologists talking about? Aren’t they talking about a mind that is conditioned by appearances and the drama of human experience? Are they knowing the Unconditioned Mind that is God?” Again, connect the dots: If psychologists are not talking about the Mind that is God, are they talking about any mind at all?

In the stillness of prayer, you have known times when you experienced a realization of God’s Allness. You experienced a deep peace, didn’t you? And there was joy too, wasn’t there? Many times you experienced one or both. Peace (and/or joy) always accompanies revelation.

Reader, have you ever realized God’s Allness and experienced sadness? How about grief? I’m sure your answer is “No!” Why not? Because peace and joy are natural states of Mind. Sadness and grief are not.

This Always Works For Me (It’ll Work For You)

Whenever I’m feeling a little down (which is not that often), I do this one thing and it always works. I pray. My prayer is just for greater realization of the I AM that I AM. I’m not praying to feel better. I’m praying for a grander realization.

If the first prayer doesn’t reveal the I AM, I pray again. I repeat this every fifteen minutes until I realize more of this I AM Presence. At some point Truth is revealed. God is experienced. A joy takes over my entire being, and I realize I am Joy.

After the first time I did this, I understood the full implication of the experience. I understood that Joy is the natural state of Mind. I perceived that sadness, depression, and grief are unnatural (unreal) states of Mind.

Don’t Do It

Reader, don’t accept grief. Don’t accept depression. Don’t accept sadness. JOY IS YOUR NATURAL STATE OF MIND AND YOUR NATURAL WAY OF BEING.

You May Need To Flip It — Here’s How

Do You Begin Your Contemplations Like Dorinda?

Every morning, and most evenings, Dorinda picks a book from the “spiritual” section of her bookcase. She opens the book to a random page and starts reading. She reads until she reaches a passage that stirs something in her. Dorinda reads this passage over and over, savoring every idea in it. Then, she closes her eyes and contemplates.

Dorinda says that the reading inspires her prayers and contemplations. She says the books anchor her prayers in spiritual principle, and keeps her mind from wandering aimlessly through a maze of insane thoughts. “But,” Dorinda says, “I don’t always reach for a book. Sometimes I listen to a tape or some audio file stored on my computer.”

You Are Already As Enlightened As Christ Jesus

This is how many people begin their contemplations, and I will not criticize. For many years I did the same thing. Reader, if you begin your contemplations like Dorinda, do you ever ask yourself, “When am I going to be as enlightened as the authors I am reading?” Do you feel like you are creeping closer to enlightenment, but never getting there?

The Truth is you are already as enlightened as any author you have ever read – even as enlightened as Christ Jesus. But, to experience this Fact, I am suggesting one simple and powerful act: Flip It. (I’ll explain later.)

Your Consciousness Is Enough

Stop thinking that you have to reach outside of yourself for inspiration to start your contemplations. Your Consciousness is enough. No, you don’t have a personal Consciousness separate from the One Infinite Consciousness, but the Consciousness you have and ARE is enough. Trust it to be.

Reader, you don’t need to pick up a book from the night stand or turn on a tape to jumpstart Consciousness. Your Consciousness is not a car battery. It is Infinite, Constant Awareness. Start relying on your Self completely. Prove to your Self that It is ALL SUPPLYING FULFILLMENT. Prove to your Self that It is the inspiration you seem to need. Prove to your Self that your Consciousness is all the motivation you seem to need.

You know, like I know, that one day we have to stop reaching outside of ourselves for any kind of “help”. Why wait for that day? The help you seem to need is in you as ever-present fulfillment.

Here’s How To Flip It

Earlier, I suggested that you Flip It. Here’s how. You simply contemplate first, and read last – if you still feel the need to read. At first this may seem awkward. You close your eyes and it feels like you’re watching a blank screen waiting for a movie that never starts. You wait, and wait. Nothing happens. A thought may flash across your mind like, “Allen is crazy.” Then you reach for the nearest book. STOP! Put the book down. Give your Self a chance!

Close your eyes again (if closing eyes is what you do) and reason this way, “Since there is only one Mind, one Consciousness, one Awareness, then the Awareness of the author and my Awareness IS one. The Truth that’s in the book is already present as my Awareness.”

Now settle back into your contemplation and watch how Truth effortlessly flows like a gurgling brook. Try this for two weeks. Even if you seem to have a rough start, most likely you’ll never go back to reading first. And you will see that “your” Consciousness is more than enough.

Contemplation Matters For These Reasons

viewing-art-museum-of-modern-art

Contemplating At The Museum

Someone asked me, “Allen, what is contemplation?”

The sibling question is “Why contemplate?” If the reason for contemplation isn’t fully understood, the what’s and how’s don’t matter. Spiritual contemplation is a calm inner looking at the Allness of God. It is Mind (God) beholding Itself. Contemplation is similar to the quiet, often uplifting, viewing of a great piece of museum artwork.

You’ve, no doubt, been to a museum and gazed at a piece of artwork. You observed the sweep of the curves, the colors, and the shading. As you continued gazing at the picture, you thought about the images in the picture. You noticed things. Without any conscious effort, thought followed thought. You saw new things you didn’t see moments before. More thoughts flowed. This is contemplation.

Take note. You were not trying to get anything out of this contemplation. You were not using it for anything. Not once did you think, “When I’m through looking at this, I hope my life gets better.”

You didn’t try to control the experience, did you? Most likely, wherever your eyes landed on the canvas, you simply basked in the beauty. You did not try to control the experience. And you certainly didn’t try to change the artwork. You merely observed and enjoyed.

Contemplation’s River Of Ideas

This leads to the first point. Spiritual contemplation is a joy-filled experience. Spiritual contemplation is just “observing” the facts of God’s Allness – or some aspect of it. For example, you may find yourself contemplating the fact that, “I and the Father are one, and not two.”

As you “observe” this Truth, Consciousness reveals that there is no separation of time and space between you and God. The flow of ideas further reveals that there is no God and you. Ideas will continue to flow leading to the awareness that there is just I Am – no you, and no God. Somewhere in your “observation”, you will see that you are not a seeker of Truth, but Truth Itself. There is no such thing as what you should see in contemplation. There are no should’s in this observation. Ultimately, this experience is Mind beholding Itself, and its activity is Self-directed. It will always lead to a place of silence where there is knowing without the unnecessary weight of words.

When you gaze at a masterpiece, contemplating its beauty, what you see at one viewing will not be the same thing you see at another viewing. That’s how it is when you contemplate Truth. There’s always something new to see (perceive).

Spiritual Contemplation Brings Your Attention Back To What Is

Why contemplate? As mentioned in the “Prayer Project”, all day long you and I seem to see and sense things that are NOT the Allness of God. You may seem to see a fight in the workplace. You may seem to see a sick person, a homeless person, animal abuse. If you are a news watcher, there’s no telling what hellacious pictures you’ll see.

When we see these things we tend to think about them over and over again. This, too, is contemplation, but how does it make you feel to continually think – contemplate – these lies about the Allness of God? This kind of contemplation is the illusory activity of a mind that seems to exist but doesn’t.

Spiritual contemplation brings our attention back to what IS. It has to. It is ISNESS beholding Itself. When contemplation of God’s Allness is just a quiet consideration of Truth, your very soul smiles. You feel good.

Look Again – Things Aren’t What They Appear To Be

Contemplation is not an escape hatch from the seeming ugliness and messiness or daily living. And it’s a mistake to think that contemplation is impractical. Contemplation is the most practical thing you can do. Here are the benefits of contemplation:

  • Contemplation is effortless.
  • Contemplation is a hands-off affair.
  • Contemplation does not require mental or physical labor to be effective.

Right now you might be saying to yourself, “How is contemplation practical?” Do you remember when stereograms had their heyday? These are large pictures that look like small, misshapen blocks of color. At first glance, you think “Boring!” But the directions tell you to continue staring at the picture, and when you do, your eyes widen and your jaw drops. Now you see a beautiful landscape that rivals a masterpiece.

At first you only saw random chunks of color. You kept looking, and then you saw a magnificent landscape. The landscape was there all along, but you had to keep looking. No effort, no labor, and no planning were required of you to make that landscape. You just had to keep looking.

That’s how contemplation works. It’s all a matter of looking and seeing. Contemplation is Mind’s way of looking (seeing/perceiving) the world (Itself). Where the first glance seems to show a picture of lack and limitation, contemplation reveals a new picture of abundance and plenty.

Perhaps your Body seems to show a picture of weakness and disease. Contemplation of God’s Allness sharpens your view. Now you see (and experience) a Body brimming with health and vitality.

And no work was done. No getting in there to fix and repair. Thus we have a contemplative consideration of God’s Allness as All, revealing (showing forth) God to BE ALL.

Your Good Can Never Be Depleted

201501_Abundant_Life

Last week I received a short handwritten note asking me to please share more of Gertrude Gephart’s writings on the blog. Below are carefully selected quotes from Ms. Gephart.

Everything is perfect even in our apparently material world, for this very world we walk in is our view of reality. It is the reflection of reality. It is our interpretation of God, of Truth which is all. To perceive this makes our good permanent. This understanding makes us quiet down and seek God and cease to look for demonstrations and miracles. In Him, all fulness of every kind of good dwells.

This world, if judged as it appears, is the world of action, of doing, of getting. We have to find the Sabbath’s day rest, the rest, the peace, of being rather than the strife of doing and getting. Perception of being takes care of doing and getting.

A certain student told her teacher, at various times, of her demonstrations over accidents, and at last he said, “This is all very well, but you should not continually have accidents to demonstrate over and out of. You are the Truth, and you cannot see evil or accidents. You cannot see a near-accident, for a near-accident is a unreal as an actual accident.”

Really when you spend money, you do not take it our of your pocket book or your bank account, though you may seem to. It comes forth from the absolute good. It comes from the body of the Christ, and that store of good can never be depleted, for it is infinite, it is limitless, it is omnipresent. Actually it is your food and clothing; it is beauty and life itself. It is the raw material of everything and it is the finished product.

We say, I bought shoes, so I cannot have a new dress or a trip out of town.” But really the shoes and the new dress and the trip out of town all come froth from the invisible absolute good, and this good can never be depleted. The shoes do not infringe upon the dress, nor the dress does not subtract from the trip.

You yourself are the only thing there is. You can’t and don’t gain anything. You can’t and don’t lose anything. Loss is hypnosis. Knowing the Truth does not add anything to your being. You are the All whether you know it or not, but as much as you perceive of this, you bring into your practical experience. The Truth we know works like yeast; it is alive. In fact Jesus called it leaven. We do not have to know how it works, or even to know that it works. If is life and it brings forth after its kind.

So This Is Why I Wasn’t Healed

God Is All allen white

This excerpt is by Alfred Aiken from The Unchallenged Self

I Declared Truth Until I Was Blue In The Face — Where’s My Healing?

Recently, one steeped in metaphysics asked for a clearer explanation of God. As the ALLNESS of God was pointed out, the seeker said, ”Oh yes, I know, but that is too absolute for me. Talk so I can understand you. The doctors at my place of business tell me I have tuberculosis and I am unable to work. I can’t pay my bills. I’ve declared Truth till I’m blue in the face but it doesn’t seem to do a bit of good. Why doesn’t God heal me? I’ve asked Him in all sincerity. I know He’s all powerful – that He’s Love Itself, so why doesn’t He heal me?”

I tried to point out the ONENESS of God, but with each statement of Truth, my visitor countered with a metaphysical quotation, assuring me this was the very same Truth he had been declaring for months on end. To break through this glib parroting, he was then asked for an original definition of what Truth is – not words or pretty, quotable sentences, but what is the Truth Itself; not the truth about Truth, but Truth’s very essence – what the I of this I-PRESENT is. This question caught his attention and he was still – he listened to the sole Self for a change, rather than to the chatter of no-Self, not-Self, not-One, not-I!

Fight Evil Appearances And They Will Appear To Get Worse

Until now, all his efforts had been expended against evil, against a condition. However, as always in the field of theology, the more evil or sin is fought, the larger it becomes – the further from the Allness of God the theologian travels. Evil is not to be wiped out, dealt with, handled, cast aside or overcome.

Why?

Because God is ALL, and this leaves nothing beside. Sickness, like aught else evil, is not something to be met, destroyed or healed, because PRESENT PERFECTION leaves no evil – leaves none sick, ailing or in distress. Surely no one would go about trying to heal God!

God’s Allness Is All That’s Going On

My visitor was asked is he had ever felt GOD was in need of prayer – had he ever “worked” for GOD, tried to set GOD free of disease, deadly germs, infection? The answer was an immediate NO! Did time ever affect GOD? NO! Is God all, right NOW? Yes! Is there more than ALL? There was a pause, then a slow acknowledgment that there is ONLY GOD. Who then is ill? NO ONE, FOR GOD IS ALL!

Suddenly, he saw this. “This is Truth!” he declared. It was clear to him that until this moment he had merely been attempting to know about Truth – about himself, about disease, but he had now know TRUTH ITSELF. Truth revealed Truth to be TRUE RIGHT NOW, WHOLE, AWARE OF BEING THE I THAT I AM – THIS I RIGHT HERE.

Some three days late, because of employment insurance regulations, the young man had to report to the doctors for another X-ray. When the X-ray was taken it showed but a slight congestion which the doctors said was possibly fatigue. When they compared the new pictures with the old ones, they were at a complete loss to explain how the old set showed such an advanced stage of the disease and the new ones did not. To be doubly sure, however, they later called for another set which showed no trace of discord, and within a matter of days the yound man was back at work.

2014’s Must-Read Posts (The Top 5)

2014

Before I write the first post of 2015, I took a look at the posts from last year and pulled out 5 posts that deserve a second, and perhaps third, read. Here they are below:

The Solution To Every Problem

Transforming Power Of A Oneness Contemplation

If dualism is the root of all problems, then ONENESS is the solution to all problems. It does not matter what the nature of the problem appears to be, ONENESS IS THE ANSWER. Dear reader, you can experience a great “transformation” of your life by completely realizing, “I and my Father are one.” By contemplating this Truth, and letting revelation after revelation come forth, every area of your life will be showered with miracles. Of course nothing really changes, and nothing is transformed, but the Finished Kingdom of Heaven, present here and now, is revealed and experienced.

Similarly, scaling the heights and plumbing the depths of the realization that THERE IS ONLY ONE PRESENCE AND ONE POWER IN AND AS ALL THE UNIVERSE can seem to transform your life, as if a fairy-godmother waved her magic wand over your world.

Never Battle Externals – Realize Truth

Beloved, never battle with so called externals. Never fight against anything or anyone that seems to be outside of you. Deal only with your Consciousness. Deal only with your Perception and Awareness. Settle the matter in your own God Consciousness, and you will completely resolve any seeming difficulty. I know you have read this many times, but do you understand its full implication? If you do, you would understand that you would never battle a headache with a pill. You would never battle a loved one with caustic words or threats of violence. Instead, you would stand still and clearly realize that God is the one and only Presence, Power, Identity, and Manifestation. Furthermore, you would know that YOU, YOURSELF, ARE THIS PRESENCE AND POWER. Having perceived this with utmost clarity, there are no issues to resolve.

What To Do About That Diagnosis

God is All

“Allen, the other day I went to the doctor’s office to get my test results. It wasn’t good. Should I just ignore the doctor’s diagnosis and focus on God’s Allness?” This question raises its head too many times to ignore; so let’s dive into the answer.

First Handle The Fear

The first order of business is to face the fear and snuff it out. Here is what worked for me. Faced with what looked like a severe health crisis, I slumped on the bed trembling (never a good sign). Fear gripped so tightly that worst case scenarios flashed across my mind. I had to do something … and quick. My next thought was, “Allen, is God All?” I answered “Yes.”

Starting from God’s Allness, I prayed asking this one question, “What mind is experiencing this fear?” The answer was not immediate. Again, I asked and listened. That night the answer revealed itself: “There is no mind aware of anything to fear.” Immediately the fear left. The situation did not change, but it was no longer in charge.

In my lectures, I often say that so-called disease is like a stray cat. Instead of milk, it feeds on fear. If there’s no fear around, it slinks away. With the fear gone, the (seeming) problem goes.

Discovering The Diagnosis Isn’t Real

Now that you have handled the fear, it’s time to handle the diagnosis. This has to be by way of Revelation. Reader, I know you’ve heard stories of people facing life-threatening diseases who picked up a book and were healed after reading a few paragraphs. I heard a story of someone who laid my book God Is All on an ailing body part and was healed. These stories don’t impress me. Revelation is the best way, and below are suggestions to prime the pump of Revelation.

In silent prayer ask:

(1) Is this diagnosis of __________ true or not?
(2) Right here where _________ seems to be, what is here?

That’s my way, but Marie Watts suggests another line of questioning that restored her sight and “cured” her cancer.

(1) God, do you know anything about _____________?
(2) Then, do I know anything about ______________?
(3) Does any mind know anything about ___________?

Do not reason out your answers. There is no power in a reasoned answer. Wait, and let the Voice of Revelation speak. This is the Voice of your God Consciousness. When It speaks, “the earth melts”. Simply put, all seeming material conditions are revealed and EXPERIENCED as nothing – no thing at all.

Why You Do The Things You Do (Spiritually)

Excerpt from Sounds Of The Trumpet

Reader, have every confidence that your reason for seeking Truth is because you are already Truth. Your attraction to things of the Spirit is because you are already Spirit. It is because you are already the Truth that you respond so warmly and affectionately to the Absolute. It is because you are already the Truth that you have moments of silence where you are free from even the appearance of a mythical world of evil, loss, and lack.

It is only because you are already whole that you have ever bothered to pray for a healing. It is because the kingdom has already been given you that you have ever prayed for any good thing. Cease reversing the Truth, thinking that you pray because you lack. IT IS BECAUSE GOD REALLY IS ALL, ALL CONSCIOUSNESS AND ALL MANIFESTATION, THAT GLORIOUS LIVING IS NOW INEVITABLE FOR YOU AND EVERY IDENTITY IN THIS VAST UNIVERSE.

Don’t Try To Still Your Mind

Silent, listening prayer is the golden gateway to Revelation. Yet too many people intent on passing through this gateway are straining and struggling with all their might and main to do the impossible. They are trying to still their minds. If this is you, STOP! Mind (your Mind) is meant to be active. It is Omni-action itself. Mind is all the activity of the universe. It will always be active. Let it be!

Reader, do not confuse Mind with the brain and its busy-bee thoughts. Brain is nothing but a severely limited and distorted sense of Mind. Mistaking the Mind to be brain is like mistaking the moon to be a gumdrop.

Mind (God) is always busy in the act of Self-Perception. Its action is awareness. Mind’s action is the awareness of being All. Its action is awareness of being One Presence and One Power. Mind’s action is awareness of being Love and Perfection. Its action is awareness of being All in action. Reader, this is the Mind that you ARE (not have) right this moment.

“But,” you say, “Allen, it’s those to-do, forgot-to-do, and other pesky little thoughts that I want to get rid of when I’m praying. What do I do about them?”

Here are some suggestions:

  • First, make a decision to stop fighting those pesky thoughts. Let Mind be active in Self (God) Awareness.
  • Then, when those unwanted busy-bee thoughts buzz about, simply remind yourself that this hyperactive mind is only a distorted experience of the I AM actively knowing and being Itself.
  • As often as necessary tell yourself, “This is not Mind. It is not Me.” Soon, you will find that you are settling into an exhilarating experience of omni-active Silence and Revelation.
